Job Summary:
The Science in Motion Specialist – Physics is responsible for conducting teacher education training in the teaching of secondary sciences (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics) utilizing state-of-the-art procedures and laboratory equipment and to teach lecture and laboratory units to high school science units. This position is paid from the State Teacher Salary Matrix and is employed 11-months per year. Extensive travel to regional high schools is required.
Essential Functions:
• Serves as a Master Teacher on assigned science curriculum.
• Recruits high school science teachers to participate in the Alabama Science in Motion Program, (ASIM).
• Develops, delivers and evaluates the science curriculum to be utilized in training teachers.
• Implements a flexible communication system for scheduling labs.
• Prepares equipment and supplies for the lab.
• Delivers laboratory equipment and supplies to participating ASIM teachers as scheduled.
• Assists teachers with laboratory activities as needed.
• Picks up laboratory equipment and supplies from participating ASIM teachers in a timely manner.
• Learns how to conduct all the ASIM labs.
• Orders, organizes, and maintains equipment and supplies so they are readily available for classroom use.
• Plans and implements workshops to train high school science teachers to use ASIM equipment.
• Plans and implements workshops to train high school science teachers in other areas of science education such as: laboratory safety, Stanford Achievement Testing, Alabama High School Graduation Exams, and other topics as needed.
• Works with ASIM teachers and other peer employees in developing new lab activities for high school students.
• Attends state-wide meetings, participating in the continual improvement and implementation of ASIM.
• Facilitates the cleaning and maintenance of the ASIM van.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Knowledge of English language to include effective writing and speaking skills.
• Excellent driving, time management and communication skills.
• Ability to promote the university to a stranger, ability to organize, and work independently.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with a variety of individuals including students, parents, faculty, staff and the public.
• Ability to work successfully under deadlines and goals; to exhibit energy and strong interpersonal skills in the accomplishment of goals.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and respond quickly and effectively to unexpected opportunities.
• Basic computer knowledge (Word, Excel, Internet).
• Physical ability to lift and carry equipment and literature weighing up to 30 pounds
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in secondary education with a teaching field in physics, or general science (as appropriate) required.
Alabama Class A Certification required
Three years teaching experience in public high schools required.
Experience conducting teacher training required.
Valid driver’s license is required.
