“The toughest job you’ll ever love.” In 1961 the Peace Corps inspired the hearts of thousands of idealistic young college grads to leave their comfort zones and their budding career paths to go somewhere in the world and make a difference.

Today, you don’t have to go halfway around the world. Our own US urban high schools are in desperate need of people with creativity, energy, a solid work ethic, and huge hearts. Students from inner city schools are not making the gains necessary to launch them out of the ghetto and into a career they can love and grow in and that can support their families. If the cycle of poverty is anything, it is tough to break… but not impossible.

We’re looking for teachers who want to make Lawrence High School a premier academic institution. We need teachers who refuse to settle for mediocrity in themselves or their students. Our students need teachers who are willing to go the extra mile, hold them to high expectations, care about them as human beings, challenge them to lofty goals, and who refuse to give up on them. Our city needs teachers who are willing to adopt innovative teaching strategies and to keep learning themselves as a part of a collaborative team dedicated to the same cause.

We are looking for teachers who are willing to forego comfort for the sake of mission.

Why do I love teaching at a high school the state has labelled as one of the worst in the state? Because I know that what I do every day makes a difference. And because we have worked hard, we are on the cutting edge of developing instructional strategies that don’t just get kids to pass tests, but that prepare students for college and a career with habits of mind that encourage reasoning, creativity, and a love for learning.

Worst to first? It can be done. It is hard, but it is not impossible. We have a growing Physics Department that offers courses from the basic conceptual level all the way to AP. Want to join us? It is indeed, the toughest job you’ll ever love.

Interested? Questions? Contact me. We need an additional physics teacher for the 2016-17 school year.

Four years college degree, major in math or science
